Is It Normal to Have Tooth Extraction Pain After 7 Days?
Your tooth was removed about a week ago. You came back with a full set of aftercare instructions. But even after a whole week, you still feel a dull ache in the empty socket. Now you’re left wondering, “Is tooth extraction pain after 7 days normal?” Some mild soreness can be part of normal healing, but pain that is worsening or not gradually improving may need to be evaluated by a dentist.

How Long Does Post-Extraction Pain Normally Last?
It usually lasts about 3 to 7 days. That’s a general timeline, not a set limit. Let’s suppose you had a simple tooth extraction, nothing too complicated. The initial healing is typically faster in this case, taking about 2 to 3 days.
Recovery after a surgical extraction, on the other hand, takes longer. Expect the pain to last about 5 to 7 days.
Pain is often worst during the first two or three days and then gradually improves.
Why You May Have Tooth Extraction Pain 7 Days Later
By day 7, the pain should be almost gone, if not completely. Some reasons why you may have persistent pain are:
Dry socket
This is perhaps the most common post-extraction complication. It happens when a blood clot dislodges from the empty socket or doesn’t form in the first place. The underlying bone and nerve endings can become exposed. This can be quite painful. You may also notice:
- Pain getting worse instead of getting better
- Bad taste
- Foul odor
- A hollow with visible bone
Infection
The extraction socket is an open wound initially. If you’re not careful enough about your oral hygiene, bacteria may enter that wound. Watch out for warning signs like throbbing pain, pus, swelling, and fever.
Trapped food debris
More often than not, food particles get stuck in the socket. This is very likely to happen after wisdom tooth removal. Eventually, they irritate the gum tissue.
Delayed healing
Factors like smoking and uncontrolled diabetes can delay healing. If your tissues don’t heal as they should, pain may persist.
When to Call Your Dentist?
A week is a long enough time to see if the socket is healing normally. Mild pain or tenderness is not something to worry about. Be more careful about your diet and oral hygiene, and keep an eye on the socket to see how well it’s healing.
You can try saltwater rinses to keep the site clean. Cold compresses can help with swelling. But if tooth extraction pain still doesn’t seem to get any better after 7 days, home remedies or an over-the-counter painkiller won’t cut it. Call your dentist right away if you notice:
- The pain getting worse
- Swelling and pus
- Dry socket symptoms
- Fever
Your dentist will assess the situation and take immediate measures to ease your discomfort.
