Do Veneers Stain or Become Discolored?
It depends on the material from which the veneers are made. Most patients choose porcelain veneers, and the good news for them is that they are pretty much stain-resistant.
That’s because porcelain is non-porous and has a smooth, glass-like surface. It does not absorb stains from foods or drinks the way your natural teeth can. So, generally, porcelain veneers tend to keep their shade for a long time.
However, this is not the case with composite veneers. Composite resin is prone to staining just like your enamel.
That said, they hold their shade well with proper oral care. But these veneers may show hue changes in 2 to 5 years, especially if you love consuming dark foods and drinks or smoke too often.
Reasons Why Your Veneers May Look Stained or Discolored
Stained veneers can occur due to different factors, some of which include:
Plaque buildup on the surface
Plaque can stick to your veneers and build up if you don’t brush regularly. This can make your veneers look yellowish or dull.
Surface staining
Surface staining is more likely to happen with composite veneers, particularly if you often consume foods or drinks like coffee, red wine, black tea, etc.
Old bonding material
The porcelain itself does not stain, but the bonding cement at the edges may discolor over time. Some patients may see dark lines around the margins of their veneers, where the bonding material meets the tooth.
Worn-out surface
After years of biting and exposure to acidic foods, your veneers may develop small microscopic irregularities on the surface. When this happens, the surface traps debris and the veneers look more dull.
Best Ways to Prevent Veneer Staining
Once you get veneers, you’ll need to follow the instructions your dentist gives to keep them stain-free for years.
Among them, one of the first ones is keeping your teeth clean. To do that, you should opt for a soft toothbrush and use gentle brushing motions so it doesn’t leave scratches on the veneer surface.
Make sure you use a non-abrasive toothpaste. Some whitening toothpastes contain materials that may wear away at the bonding material. Ask your dentist if you’re unsure which toothpaste is best for you.
You can enjoy different foods and drinks, but to keep your veneers looking their best, try limiting the ones that cause staining. This is especially recommended to those with composite veneers.
Routine dental cleanings also keep veneers looking fresh. But if your veneers appear too stained, talk to your dentist to see whether they need repair or replacement.
